If you are asking, “How much does it cost to build a gaming PC?”, the honest answer is: it depends on what you actually want to do with it.

There is no single price that defines a good gaming PC.

In South Africa, a sensible gaming PC can start around R15,000–R20,000, while stronger systems can move into the R30,000–R40,000 range, high-end machines can cost R40,000–R60,000, and an extreme, no-compromise gaming PC can easily exceed R60,000.

But that does not mean you should spend R60,000 if you only need a PC for 1080p gaming. Before looking at individual parts, it is worth comparing complete gaming PCs that are already balanced around a particular budget and performance level. A reputable pre-built system can sometimes offer excellent value, particularly if you want the PC assembled, tested and supported rather than choosing every component yourself.

The important thing is not to start with the most expensive machine you can afford. Start with what you actually want to play and then work out what hardware you need.

I disagree.

The best gaming PC is the one that is properly matched to what you actually want to do with it.

So, how much should you budget?

As a practical South African starting point, I would look at gaming PC budgets roughly like this:

R20,000–R30,000 Good 1080p gaming
R30,000–R40,000 Strong gaming system
R40,000–R60,000 High-end gaming
R60,000+ Extreme / no-compromise

These are not rigid categories. Prices change, components change and, more importantly, people’s requirements change.

A R20,000 PC might be exactly right for one gamer and completely unsuitable for another.

That is why I would not start a PC recommendation by asking, “How much do you want to spend?”

I would start by asking:

“What do you want to do with the PC?”

Start with the games, not the components

This is probably the most important advice I can give.

Before deciding whether you need an Intel Core i5, i7 or i9, or which AMD Ryzen processor you should buy, identify the games you actually intend to play.

Why?

Because different games have different hardware requirements.

For example, the official Steam requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 list 16 GB of RAM and a GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, Radeon RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770 as recommended graphics hardware, alongside a Core i7-12700 or Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, meanwhile, has considerably different recommended requirements, including 12 GB of RAM and graphics options such as the RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT.

That demonstrates why simply saying “I want a gaming PC” is not enough information to choose the hardware.

The right approach is:

Identify the games. Check their recommended requirements. Establish the resolution you want to play at. Establish the frame rate you want. Decide whether you will also stream, record or create content. Build the rest of the system around those requirements.

This prevents you from spending thousands of rand on performance you may never use.

R15,000–R20,000: Entry-level gaming

A budget of R15,000 to R20,000 is where I would generally place an entry-level gaming PC.

That does not mean it is a bad gaming PC.

It means you are being more selective about where the money goes.

For someone playing less demanding games, esports titles or games at 1080p, this kind of system can make a lot of sense.

At this price point, I would prioritise:

A sensible gaming CPU. A capable dedicated GPU. 16 GB of RAM as a sensible starting point. Fast SSD storage. A reliable motherboard. A quality PSU. Adequate cooling.

I would not spend a large portion of the budget on a premium case or elaborate RGB lighting.

If the choice is between a better graphics card and an expensive case covered in RGB, I would take the graphics card every time.

Consider a pre-built system too

One thing I would particularly consider at this budget is a reputable pre-built gaming PC.

There is sometimes an assumption that building your own PC must automatically be cheaper or better.

That isn’t necessarily true.

A good PC builder has already considered compatibility between the CPU, motherboard, RAM, GPU, PSU, cooling and case. You are also buying the convenience of having the system assembled and, depending on the seller, supported under warranty.

For a customer with a fixed R20,000 budget, I would absolutely compare a good pre-built system against the cost of buying every component separately.

R20,000–R30,000: Good 1080p gaming

For many gamers, this is where things become particularly interesting.

A budget of R20,000–R30,000 can provide a very capable gaming PC, particularly when the target is 1080p.

At this level, you have more room to choose components based on performance rather than simply trying to stay within a minimum requirement.

You can also start thinking more seriously about:

Higher refresh-rate monitors. Competitive gaming. Better graphics settings. Larger SSDs. More capable CPUs. Better cooling. A motherboard with a useful upgrade path.

You still don’t necessarily need an enthusiast-grade CPU.

This is where the misconception that “gaming means i9 or Ryzen 9” can become expensive.

A high-end CPU can be excellent, but excellent does not automatically mean necessary.

If a less expensive processor paired with the right GPU delivers the gaming performance you want, spending thousands more on the CPU may not give you a worthwhile return.

R30,000–R40,000: Strong gaming

At around R30,000–R40,000, you can start putting together a seriously capable gaming system.

This is the range where I would expect someone to have more freedom to choose a stronger GPU, better supporting components and a more substantial upgrade path.

It is also a good range for someone who wants to do more than simply play games.

For example:

Gaming + content creation changes the equation.

If you are recording gameplay, streaming, editing video or doing other demanding work, the processor, RAM and storage requirements may become more important than they would be for someone who only plays games.

This is why I always ask what the PC is going to be used for before recommending components.

R40,000–R60,000: High-end gaming

Once you move into the R40,000–R60,000 range, you are entering high-end territory.

At this point, you have considerably more freedom to target higher resolutions, higher refresh rates and demanding games.

But even here, I would still ask the same question:

Do you actually need it?

There is a difference between wanting the best PC available and needing the best PC available.

If someone wants a high-end machine because they genuinely want high-resolution gaming, high refresh rates, demanding titles, content creation and a long useful life, then the additional investment can make sense.

If someone plays a handful of relatively undemanding games at 1080p, spending R50,000 simply because the budget is available may not be sensible.

R60,000+: Extreme or no-compromise gaming

At R60,000 and above, you are moving into the territory of people who genuinely want a no-compromise system.

This can make sense for enthusiasts.

Maybe you want an extremely powerful GPU. Maybe you want high-end 4K gaming. Maybe you stream, edit video and game on the same machine. Maybe you simply enjoy having top-end hardware.

There is nothing wrong with that.

The important thing is understanding that you are paying for the additional performance and capability, rather than assuming that everyone needs it.

A no-compromise PC is a luxury. It is not the minimum requirement for having an excellent gaming experience.

Don’t build your PC around the CPU

One of the misconceptions I regularly see is the idea that the CPU should be the centre of the entire gaming PC.

It shouldn’t.

The system needs to be balanced.

The GPU is particularly important for high-end gaming because it has a direct impact on graphics rendering performance. The right GPU should therefore be selected based on the games, resolution and performance target.

That doesn’t mean buying the most expensive GPU available.

It means buying the right GPU.

The same principle applies to the CPU.

AMD Ryzen processors have become extremely competitive, and the high-end Ryzen range can deliver excellent performance. But that does not mean every gamer needs the most powerful Ryzen processor available.

Likewise, you don’t automatically need an Intel Core i9 simply because it is higher in the product range.

The goal is not to have the biggest number on the specification sheet.

The goal is to have the right combination of components.

How much RAM do you need?

For a modern gaming PC, I would generally recommend looking at 16 GB to 32 GB of RAM.

For many gamers, 16 GB is still a sensible starting point.

If you are gaming while streaming, recording, editing content or running other demanding applications, moving towards 32 GB can make more sense.

But 64 GB isn’t automatically better simply because the number is bigger.

More RAM only helps when the workload actually benefits from it.

This is another example of why more expensive does not automatically mean better value.

Don’t underestimate storage

Storage is becoming increasingly important.

Modern games can be very large, and having a fast SSD with enough capacity is much more practical than constantly having to uninstall games to make room for new ones.

For example, Cyberpunk 2077 lists 70 GB of storage and requires an SSD, while Black Ops 6 lists 128 GB of available SSD space at launch and notes that additional space may be required for updates.

That is why I would rather see someone buy adequate storage capacity than spend their entire budget chasing a tiny difference in theoretical storage speed.

You need enough room for:

Your operating system. Your games. Applications. Updates. Personal files. Future games.

The minimum requirement for a game is not necessarily the amount of storage you should buy.

Cooling should be a priority

One area I believe people sometimes overlook is cooling.

A gaming PC can generate substantial heat, particularly when the CPU and GPU are under sustained load.

Good cooling helps maintain stable operating temperatures and can contribute to consistent performance and component longevity.

That does not mean you automatically need an expensive liquid cooler.

Liquid cooling is not always better simply because it is more expensive.

A properly selected air cooler can be perfectly suitable for many systems.

The cooling solution should match the processor, workload, case airflow and overall system.

Good case airflow, appropriate fans, a suitable CPU cooler and proper thermal management matter far more than simply buying the most expensive cooling system you can find.

The motherboard matters more than the marketing

I would not recommend spending a huge percentage of your budget on a motherboard simply because it has a long list of features.

But I also wouldn’t treat the motherboard as an afterthought.

A good gaming motherboard should provide the connectivity, compatibility and expansion options that the system actually needs.

If you want to upgrade later, look at things such as:

Available RAM slots. Supported RAM capacity. CPU compatibility. PCIe expansion. M.2 storage slots. GPU clearance. USB connectivity. Networking. BIOS support. Future processor support where applicable.

Spending a little more today on the right motherboard can sometimes save you money later.

For example, if you buy a motherboard with limited expansion options simply because it is cheaper, you may eventually discover that your next upgrade requires replacing more of the system than you expected.

Don’t cheap out on the PSU

If there is one component I would never recommend treating as an afterthought, it is the power supply.

A PSU needs to be appropriately sized for the system and come from a reputable manufacturer.

You need to consider:

Wattage. Efficiency. Quality. Age. Connectors. GPU requirements. CPU requirements. Future upgrades.

For example, NVIDIA’s published specifications for the RTX 5060 list a 550 W required system power figure, while the RTX 5060 Ti lists 600 W under NVIDIA’s specified configuration. Actual system requirements can vary depending on the rest of the hardware.

The lesson is not simply “buy a 600 W PSU.”

The lesson is to look at the complete system and choose an appropriate, quality PSU.

A cheap or underpowered PSU is not a place where I would try to save money.

Your case does not make your PC faster

This one is simple.

A case can look fantastic.

You can have tempered glass, RGB fans, futuristic styling and an impressive gaming aesthetic.

But the case itself doesn’t make your GPU render games faster.

For some gamers, aesthetics are important. If you’re heavily into gaming, you might want all the RGB you can get. There is nothing wrong with that.

But if you have a limited budget, I would prioritise performance components first.

A decent, well-designed case with good airflow can do the job without consuming a disproportionate part of your budget.

RGB is optional. Performance isn’t.

RGB lighting has become part of gaming culture.

But RGB doesn’t increase FPS.

If you love RGB, buy it.

If you don’t care about it, don’t spend money on it.

This is exactly the kind of decision where your personal preference should determine where your money goes.

I would rather see someone spend money on a better GPU, additional storage or better cooling than spend the same amount purely on cosmetic lighting.

Future-proofing: spend intelligently, not endlessly

Everyone wants their PC to last.

That is understandable.

But future-proofing is frequently misunderstood.

Future-proofing does not mean buying the most expensive components available.

It means making sensible choices that leave you with options.

For example, spending an additional R5,000 today may make sense if it gives you:

A better motherboard. More RAM capacity. Additional M.2 slots. Better expansion capability. A stronger PSU. Better cooling. A platform with a useful upgrade path.

Those things can make the system easier to upgrade later.

But if your budget is limited, you also shouldn’t feel pressured into spending money you don’t have simply because somebody tells you that you need to future-proof your PC.

If you need a PC today and your budget only allows for a certain configuration, buy what you can afford today.

You can upgrade later.

Sometimes an upgrade is better than a new PC

Another question I would ask is:

Do you actually need a completely new computer?

If someone already owns a reasonably modern gaming PC, it may be possible to improve its performance with a targeted upgrade.

Depending on the existing hardware, an upgrade could involve:

Replacing the GPU. Adding RAM. Increasing storage. Improving cooling. Upgrading the CPU. Replacing the PSU. Moving to a newer platform.

Sometimes an upgrade kit can make more financial sense than replacing the entire machine.

But this has to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

There is no point putting a powerful new GPU into a system where the motherboard, PSU, CPU or cooling creates a serious limitation.

A real lesson from a customer experience

Although I am relatively new to selling gaming PCs specifically, I have already encountered situations that demonstrate why component selection matters.

One example involved a customer who purchased a relatively low-end gaming motherboard. Something went wrong during the installation, and we ultimately changed it for a more appropriate motherboard.

The customer was very happy with the result.

I won’t mention names, but the experience reinforced something I already believe strongly:

A PC isn’t just a collection of individual components.

The components have to work together.

You can have a great CPU and a great GPU, but if the supporting hardware isn’t appropriate, the overall system may not deliver the experience you expected.

That is why compatibility, quality and upgradeability need to be considered alongside raw specifications.

Pre-built vs custom-built: which is better?

There is no universal winner.

A custom-built PC gives you much more control over the individual PC components and allows you to tailor the system very precisely to your requirements. You can decide where your money goes, choose the hardware you prefer and plan the system around future upgrades.

But a reputable pre-built PC can also be an excellent choice. For someone with a fixed budget, I would compare the complete system against the cost of buying the same or similar components separately. You may find that the pre-built option gives you better value once assembly, testing, warranty and support are taken into consideration.

Whichever route you choose, don’t judge the system simply by its name or appearance. Look at the actual CPU, GPU, motherboard, RAM, PSU, storage and cooling. Those are the components that determine what the PC can actually do.

For someone with a fixed budget, I would compare the two.

Look at:

Custom build

Individual component prices.
Assembly.
Compatibility.
Warranty.
Support.
Upgrade options.

Pre-built

Exact CPU. Exact GPU. Motherboard specification. RAM configuration. PSU manufacturer and rating. Storage. Cooling. Warranty. Upgrade options.

Do not judge a pre-built PC simply by the words “gaming PC” on the product page.

Likewise, don’t assume a custom-built PC is automatically better simply because you selected every component yourself.

The actual specifications matter.

Be careful with gaming PC marketing

Words such as:

“Extreme Gaming” “Ultra Performance” “Gaming Beast” “Ultimate Gaming” “High Performance”

sound impressive.

But they don’t tell you how well the computer will actually run your games.

Look at the actual hardware.

What CPU?

What GPU?

How much RAM?

What RAM configuration?

What motherboard?

What PSU?

What storage?

What cooling?

What resolution and frame rate can you realistically expect?

Marketing names don’t tell you that.

The components do.

Don’t forget the operating system and other costs

When calculating the cost of a gaming PC, remember that the computer itself isn’t necessarily the entire gaming setup.

Depending on what you already own, you may also need to budget for:

Windows. Monitor. Keyboard. Mouse. Headset. Speakers. Wi-Fi or networking equipment. Additional storage. Games. A suitable desk or gaming setup.

Windows 11 has its own hardware requirements, including a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI/Secure Boot capability and TPM 2.0.

Of course, a gaming PC should generally have substantially more than Microsoft’s bare minimum requirements.

The minimum requirements for an operating system are not the same thing as the requirements for a good gaming experience.

What should you check before buying?

Before spending R20,000, R30,000, R40,000 or more, I would recommend checking these things carefully:

1. What games are you actually playing?

Don’t build around an imaginary future workload.

Start with the games you actually want to play.

2. What resolution do you want?

1080p, 1440p and 4K place different demands on your hardware.

3. What frame rate are you targeting?

There is a big difference between simply wanting a game to run and wanting a high-refresh-rate competitive experience.

4. Is the CPU appropriate?

Don’t automatically buy the most expensive processor.

5. Is the GPU appropriate?

The GPU should be selected according to the games and resolution you actually intend to use.

6. Is the RAM sufficient?

For many gaming systems, I would look at 16 GB to 32 GB depending on the workload.

7. Is the storage large enough?

Game installations are getting larger, so don’t underestimate capacity.

8. Is the PSU reputable and powerful enough?

This is one component where I would not take unnecessary risks.

9. Is the cooling adequate?

A powerful system needs appropriate thermal management.

10. Can you upgrade it?

Look beyond today’s specifications.

11. What warranty are you getting?

A gaming PC is a significant investment. Understand what protection you receive.

12. Who are you buying from?

Check the seller’s reputation, support and track record.

What if you need portability?

Not everyone needs a desktop gaming PC. If you regularly travel, move between locations or simply don’t have space for a desktop setup, a gaming notebook can be a better option.

You will generally pay more for comparable hardware in a laptop because you are also paying for the display, battery, keyboard, compact design and portability. However, if being able to take your gaming system with you matters, that extra cost can be worthwhile.

The same principle still applies: don’t buy the most powerful gaming notebook you can afford just because it has the biggest specifications. Start with the games you want to play and choose the hardware around those requirements.

So, how much should you actually spend?

If you are looking for a simple answer, my starting point would be:

R15,000–R20,000 for an entry-level gaming PC.

R20,000–R30,000 for a good 1080p gaming system.

R30,000–R40,000 for a strong gaming PC.

R40,000–R60,000 for a high-end gaming system.

R60,000+ for an extreme, no-compromise machine.

But those numbers should be treated as planning ranges, not rules.

The most important question isn’t:

“How much can I spend?”

It is:

“What do I actually need this PC to do?”

Once you know that, the budget becomes much easier to determine.

Final advice: don’t buy the PC with the biggest number

If there is one thing I would want a South African gamer to take away from this article, it is this:

Don’t spend money simply because you can.

A R60,000 gaming PC isn’t automatically better value than a R30,000 gaming PC.

A Ryzen 9 isn’t automatically better for your particular gaming needs than a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7.

An i9 isn’t automatically the right choice.

64 GB of RAM isn’t automatically necessary.

A huge graphics card isn’t automatically required.

A liquid cooler isn’t automatically better.

And a case covered in RGB certainly isn’t going to give you more FPS.

What matters is balance.

Choose your games. Understand their requirements. Decide what resolution and frame rate you want. Decide whether you’re gaming only or also creating content. Then choose your components around those requirements.

Spend money where it actually improves your experience.

Make sure the components are compatible.

Use a quality PSU.

Give the system adequate cooling.

Leave yourself a sensible upgrade path where your budget allows it.

And if a good pre-built PC offers better value for your budget, don’t be afraid to buy one.

The goal isn’t to build the most expensive gaming PC you can afford. The goal is to build or buy the gaming PC that gives you the performance you actually need, at a price that makes sense.

That is what good PC budgeting is really about.
